Huangshi Institute of Technology (HIT) is a state-owned institution of higher learning administrated by Hubei Provincial Government. It was established with the approval from the Ministry of Education in December 1975. It is situated in the second largest city in Hubei Province------ Huangshi city, which is on the southern bank of the Yangtze River and is known as “the Pearl of South China”. The institute faces a large lake------Cihu Lake and leans against Qinglong Hill. It has a campus of 145 hectares (2189 mu) with a construction area of more than 530,000 square meters. The total value of the teaching and research apparatuses amounts to 70 million RMB. The college library has an extensive collection of 706,200 volumes and about 2000 periodicals in Chinese and foreign languages. On the garden-like campus stand modern teaching buildings, research buildings, laboratory buildings and libraries. It has brilliant flowers and green woods all year round. With a serene environment, the campus is an ideal place for teaching, research and learning.
HIT boasts an array of qualified teachers as well as scholars full of vigor and vitality. Among its 1242 staff members and workers, there are 873 full-time teachers. There are 50 professors, 271 associate professors; 296 doctors and masters. 5 teachers have been awarded Special Subsidies by State Council, 2 by the Provincial government and still another 5 the title of “Distinguished Youth Expert” for their great contribution at Provincial level. HIT also has many honorary professors from prestigious universities in China.
The college attaches great importance to the development of disciplines. After adjusting and expanding some of the disciplines, HIT has formed an optimized disciplinary system consisting natural science, engineering, economics, management, literature, medicine and education. Now, it comprises 17 teaching units ------School of Mechanic and Dynamic Engineering, School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, School of Environmental Science and Engineering, School of Civil Engineering, School of Economics and Business Administration, School of Computer and Information Engineering, School of Chemistry and Materials Engineering, School of Art, School of Foreign Languages, School of Mathematics and Physics, School of Higher Vocational Education, School of Network Education, Medical School, Normal School, International Cultural Exchange School, Humanity and Social Science Department as well as Physical Education Department.
The college has two provincial key disciplines------Mechanical and Electronic Engineering and Environmental Engineering. It offers 20 bachelor’s degree programs and 50 three-year programs for vocational and technological education. The specialty of Environmental Engineering and the specialty of Mechanical Manufacturing and Equipment are authorized as the pilot projects of the State Educational Reform. HIT boasts CAD Training Center, Computer Network Center and 26 practice base, such as the bases for Metal Processing, Electrician and Electronics, Basic Chemistry, Basic Computer Operation, Modern Manufacturing Technology, Environmental Engineering, E-business, etc.
HIT has always laid emphasis on academic exchange with foreign countries. It has set up close cooperative relationship with many overseas universities and scientific research institutions. HIT and The College of North Atlantic have a joint program------“Sino-Canada joint program of cultivating creative talents”.
New emphasis was placed on scholarly achievement. It has established 7 scientific research institutes such as the Environmental Engineering Comprehensive Designing Institute, the Mechanical and Electrical Controlling Institute, and so on. The academic program gained a significant stamp of approval. More than 100 faculties have won scientific research prizes of provincial or municipal level, and still 4 others have won the title of “Distinguished Scientific and technological talent” of provincial or municipal level.
HIT puts fostering qualified talents in the first place, carries out teaching reform to improve its teaching quality. At present the college has a student body of 20,000. As the college has attached great importance to quality-oriented education, the graduates are widely welcomed by the society. In the past several years, its one-time employment rate of graduates is over 85%.

In the new century, all the teaching staff and students are determined to stick to the college’s spirits “seek truth from facts, advocate perseverance and make innovation”. HIT will continue to put fostering qualified talents in the first place. All the other work will revolve around teaching and learning. The construction of disciplines and innovation will serve the development of the college. It has set a goal to develop bachelor’s degree programs fast, keep the scale of vocational and technological education, continue to develop continual education and begin to develop master’s degree program and recruit overseas students.
